Fishing in Minnesota’s lakes is a favorite summer past time for many people. Before you head out on your fishing adventure, there are a few things to remember and a few tips to soak up. To get the most out of your fishing trip, check out these helpful hints.

Even before you head out on the water, make sure your boat is equipped for a fishing trip. Grab your life jackets, safety equipment, fishing poles, fishing net, bait and tackle box, sunscreen, snacks and beverages to ensure maximum time spent out on the lake. It might also be helpful to look up what kinds of fish are popular in the lake you are fishing on to adjust your fishing gear accordingly.

While fishing can be an exciting sport, it does require a lot of patience. Not every fishing trip will result in tons of fish being caught and when you do catch a fish, it might be after hours of repeated casting and reeling in. Be prepared to spend some time out on the lake to really get the whole fishing experience.

Even though catching a fish is great, part of fishing is the time spent enjoying the experience. Sitting in a boat, hearing the sound of the waves against the boat, enjoying the openness of being on the water is something everyone should experience, regardless of whether or not they catch a fish. So when you go fishing, enjoy the small stuff so that you can truly remember your fishing experience fondly.

Seasonal Turkey Hunting

People hunt for turkeys during spring, as well as, every fall season. Permit is always needed if you are starting on turkey hunting. Both permits for spring and fall, nevertheless, are dissimilar. The spring license admits hunters in a particular domain along among the five-day turkey hunt time frame. In fall, if you’re a hunter, permits will leave you to track down turkeys any time on this seasonal activity. Provided, this happens inside the zone enrolled on the license. When you obtain your permit for turkey hunt sport, there are a few things you may pursue to have a productive pleasure trip.

First of all, prepare yourself to rehearse patience. This exceptional hunting calls for numerous patience. Turkey hunting in spring time demands little endurance, as you concoct sounds like a turkey hen to attempt getting a gobbler to descend to you. During fall, turkeys do not couple, though; indeed you will control to patiently operate while on stand as you hunt. Halt hunting entails finding a corner and then waiting for your turkey to approach to you.

At some degree, you will be, during spring season, turkey-hunting, intimacy with numerous gimmicks used to fathom as though an actual turkey. Chief types are divided into three sorts. The first is known as a friction cry. This turkey voice is brought out by scratching two surfaces conjointly. The second is best-known as mouth call. To do this is through air either breathe in or out by your mouth. Finally, last one is sounded out to be a shaker. This gimmick generates a “gobble” clamor once you’re shaking it in a speedy movement.

It will not weigh which types of shout out you prefer using. All you necessitate is to drill diligent your call sounds. From listening to turkeys alone, you will notice determining closer how they make sound. These tools are among the most adept exercises to use. Being discriminating to turkey behavioral voice or for best outcomes record them on audio, produces better yields. It is not an awful idea to likewise fetch assistance, merely get hold of a seasoned turkey hunter to demonstrate to you tricks. Turkeys are rather competent of arriving at more than twenty-four dissimilar sounds. All the same, Most huntsmen can exclusively detect approximately ten of them. Their cries could include yelping, clucking, purring, cackling, and gobbling, the most generally discerned sound of all. Establishing yourself acquainted to all of these turkey vociferations or audios guarantees a finer encounter at capturing one.

The most crucial matter to do in ensuring a enjoyable turkey hunting down experience is through practicing safety. Turkey hunting, comparable to other kinds of hunting, lays a menace once precaution and wisdom is not exhibited in the hunting grounds. Simply once you are looking for a tom turkey applying gobble mimics proves to be useful. Fend off its application to draw in other turkey. Opposite hunters will believe that you are an actual turkey because of your sound. Coursing the peril of being shot induced by negligence on your share is the worse thing that can happen. Disguise your head and hands, the whole time as you form turkey squalls.

Your security and of others, as well, can be obtained through these things, which you will be able to do for a risk-free hunt. First, never stalk any turkey in close range. Getting nearer to a tom than a hundred yards is likewise a no no. Base yourself in a calling point that reserves you to construe forty yards, at minimum, in every stirring. Be motionless to avoid exposing lure. Assume an orange colored head cap or hand gloves during the search while walking. Camouflaged garment is easily misidentified as a literal turkey by your co-hunters. In fact, greater degree of accidental shootings comes about because a hunter, regrettably, mistook another as the target. Lastly, never bypass the 3 primary rules of hunting:

Handle all pistols as though it is charged.
Forever aim the gun in a secure direction, distant from other people.
Prior to pulling your trigger, be a hundred percent certain of your mark.

Every bit easy as, adopting these conventions and guidelines will appropriate you to experience a sure-fire seasonal turkey-hunting, either be it in spring or fall time. Like with multifaceted contours of hunting, your most eminent priority is safety. Think of these decrees before getting prepared for theapproaching turkey-hunting activities. Bear several understanding connected to the specifics of the sport.

Author: PoorFish
Scent Lok maker of carbon activated scent eliminating products was found guilty of false or deceptive advertising by the U.S. District Court. Also involved in the case were Cabela’s Wholesale, Cabela’s Inc., and Gander Mountain Company that sold and/or licensed the Scent Lok products. The suite was filed by 5 hunters in Minnesota that felt the claims of Scent Lok were not correct and miss lead customers into purchasing the carbon based hunting clothes.

Scent Lok stated in commercials and other forms of advertising that their products “eliminate” human odor so a hunter can hunt “scent free” and that the product can be “reactivated” or “regenerated” in a common household dyer. The judge concluded that advertising that the product eliminates odors was not correct but he did ease up on the reactivation aspect of the case. As a result the judge ruled that the 5 hunters from Minnesota could seek “complete restitution for monies they spent on Scent Lok products.” I hope that the hunters do seek all the restitution they can.

I feel that it is wrong for a company to try and deceive customers into thinking that they could buy a product that uses carbon to eliminate human odors. At the same time I must also think how someone could believe that the product would completely eliminate odors. I can see hiding the odor or masking it like other scent killer products but unless it had some kind of battery or electronic system I would be very skeptical of such a claim. The company probably knew that the statement they were making was completely wrong because if it truly eliminated human odors it would be an amazing thing that every sock, shoe, and deodorant manufacture would be knocking down doors to get. Something that could eliminate smelly feet and BO would probably win a Popular Science or World Peace Award (maybe not the latter).

The judgment made won’t make things easy for Scent Lok in the future because now hunters who purchased the products under the false belief can seek restitution. Hunter in other states filed cases with Scent Lok and they are still awaiting judgment. With the case in Minnesota being denied class action status I highly doubt many people will want to spend the money or time hiring their own lawyer to fight the case over the cost of a shirt or two. Hopefully hunters in the other states can do more on the class action status so that people an at least get some of their money back. If class action status is denied in those other states at least Scent Lok will have to spend a pretty little penny on legal fees.

Author: Bruce Keyes

How do you know if you are getting the best scope for your gun? There are several factors to consider in making that decision. The first of which would be, what magnification and objective lens size is needed? Magnification would be decided by the average distance of shots placed. For those who use the scope for muzzle loaders or shotguns, large magnification above 7 to 9X are rarely practical. Most shots are placed at fairly close range, making 3 to 4X most comfortable. Larger magnification limits the field of view. Varmint hunting often requires high magnification to make accurate shots at long range. Many competition shooters enjoy the benefits of extreme magnification for placing accurate and award winning shots. Most hunting in our Midwest area is done in tight quarters, limiting the effectiveness of extreme magnification scopes. Heavy underbrush or hills make for shots that don’t exceed 200 to 300 yards, for which the average 3 to 9X scope would be sufficient. Objective lens size in millimeters determines the amount of light allowed to enter the scope. A 33mm objective lens will not allow as much light as a 50mm lens. The 50mm lens will make objects appear brighter and clearer. The magnification and objective lens size are both pertinent to the range of shots made.

Secondly, conditions dictate the level of quality in optics and coating. Shots placed in low light conditions need a lens that will bring in as much light as possible. Any time light goes through a lens, light transmission is reduced, so the larger the lens the more available light. A lens coating that reduces reflected light and instead allows it to enter the scope is good. Higher magnification scopes have more lenses and transmit less light. Zoom scopes have more lenses and transmit even less light. A high quality scope will exceed 90% light transmission. A high magnification Zoom scope will be more expensive than some, but have qualities that will keep it from failing at the worst moment. There are several levels of coating. Coated: single coating on at least one lens surface. Fully Coated: single coating on all air to glass surfaces. Multi Coated: more than one layer on a least one lens surface. Fully Multi coated: multiple layers on all air to glass surfaces. Although one pays more for properly coated quality optics, the benefits are apparent if shooting in low light conditions.

Another consideration is the reticle and how it is adjusted. For scopes that are to be zeroed and left alone, many adjustment turrets have a coin slot. As the scopes are made more adjustable for wind, bullet weight, range, etc., these adjustments may have to be made in the field. Finger adjustable turrets become quite nice at that point. The choice of reticle configuration is mostly personal choice but the durability isn’t negotiable. To be assured of repeatable adjustments it is worth paying for a quality scope from a reputable manufacturer. Many cheap scopes have cheapened reticle attachments. The crushing recoil of today’s heavy rifles or muzzle loaders will, after a few shots, change the adjustment or break at the worst moment, such as when shooting at the trophy buck of a lifetime.

In conclusion, there are many factors to consider to ensure the purchase of the correct scope for your gun. They all come back to how you are going to use the gun. The style and size of the gun determine mounting options. The experience of the hunter gives a place to start on the magnification. Imagine an inexperienced hunter trying to hold a high magnification scope steady at long range; nearly impossible unless the gun is sandbagged or on a gun rest. So for ease of use, a lower magnification scope is the simplest to start with. The range of the shots to be made also determines the magnification needed. Most of the scopes in the range of 3 to 4X would be sufficient to comfortably see and hit the target. Some of the competitive shooting done on gun rests and sand bags, by experienced shooters, may require more extreme magnification. Paying the price for quality lenses, coatings, reticle adjustments and sturdiness is well worth the investment if hunting under any adverse conditions. As always, the scope should be absolutely guaranteed for life and waterproof. There are many choices out there for scopes, and when that trophy is on the wall, the few extra dollars paid for quality will seem well worth it in hindsight. Happy shooting!

The United States has many forests, but all of them cannot be counted as public hunting lands. Compared to many other states, Minnesota can provide a fair number of public hunting lands for the eager hunter. Also, plenty of resources are available to provide information regarding these lands. As a matter of fact, Minnesota public hunting land maps are readily provided by the Minnesota DNR or Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

All the public hunting properties looked after by the state of Minnesota can be pinpointed on the Minnesota public hunting land maps. Hunting regulations and rules slightly vary in each type of land.

According to the Minnesota public hunting land maps, hunting areas in this state have been categorized as follows–

(1) Wildlife Management Areas.

(2) State Forests.

(3) Wildlife Protection Areas.

(4) National Wildlife Refuges.

(5) National Forests.

(6) Industrial Forest Lands.

(7) County-owned Lands.

Each kind of land is described below–

(1) The Department of Natural Resources looks after uplands, woods and wetlands listed as “Wildlife Management Areas”. Public hunting is allowed on these locations during the normal hunting season.

(2) There are 56 forests belonging to the state. Covering an area of three million acres, these “state forests” are home to animals like bear, deer, ruffled grouse and moose. The public is given access for hunting in these areas.

(3) Some areas are under federal protection, yet open for limited public hunting. These “Wildlife Protection Areas” consist of a few uplands and wetlands. The Minnesota Public Recreation Information (PRIM) maps will lend Minnesota public hunting land maps to search for these locations.

(4) The US Fish and Wildlife Service gives access to Minnesota public hunting land maps as well as hunting laws related to its 8 “National Wildlife Refuges”. Hunting is restricted to certain parts only, and the harvest allowed is limited.

(5) The 2 “National Forests” of the state are Superior and Chippewa. A hunter can get Minnesota public hunting land maps for directions to these northern forests from the US National Forest Service, since hunting is allowed on these properties.

(6) Large companies dealing with forest products also own “Industrial Forest Lands”. Hunters are geneally allowed access to these properties during the regular hunting season, unless a company wants to use its land for another purpose.

(7) Landowners who have not been able to pay their taxes, lose their properties (generally forested areas) to the government. They are then considered as “County-owned Lands”. There are Minnesota public hunting land maps to provide directions as well as the list of hunting regulations to be followed. Each county has its own hunting laws. Also, the acreage varies from place to place.

Well, try taking a few tips from walleye fishing pro Dave Underhill, who is equally as comfortable on the ice as he is in a boat. Underhill points out that the location of fish species like walleye, northern pike and panfish in January and February mirrors their location …
Marr Park was the scene of many smiling faces Saturday afternoon. The Washington County Conservation Education Center hosted a day of ice fishing on one of its frozen ponds. There were four tents set up on the pond for the kids to ice fish inside. In one tent, fishermen kept watch of the fish through a television connected to an underwater camera. When the tents overflowed with people, more …

It was that time of year again; time to take the thirteen hour car ride for a week-long fishing adventure to Canada. My father, Uncle and I leading the way in a 2005 F-150 Ford truck with my Brother and Grandfather following closely behind. Six am was the first pit stop, breakfast at a truck stop right before beginning the nine-hour interstate journey to International Falls, MN. Anticipation was always high the whole truck ride to Canada, wondering how many Walleye the lake that my family has vacationed to for 25 years would produce. Stories of past Canada fishing trips vibrate throughout the truck, we caught more fish in that F-150 than on any body of water, and everyone was on cloud nine. A lot of flashbacks occurred on this trek, Canada never disappointed us when it came to making memories.

A Canada fishing trip with your family or loved one can offer amazing relaxation and peace if you are looking for a place to do so. The pristine fishing alone can make anyone’s trip one of the most memorable of their lives. With a high density of fish such as Walleye, Northern Pike, Muskie, Smallmouth Bass, Perch, and Trout in almost every lake, you are nearly guaranteed to catch more fish than anywhere else.

Canada also bears amazing scenery like crystal clear placid lakes, unbelievable sunsets, rolling green hills, and an abundance of wildlife found nowhere else. On your drive to the lodge, it is not uncommon to see a moose or black bear crossing the road in front of you. Most fishing camps and lodges are very secluded and will boast outstanding wildlife views right from your front porch.

A common misconception of Canada fishing lodges is that they are very old and lack amenities such as running water, electricity, air conditioning, TV, and other “must haves” when vacationing. Canada does still have camps like this if you want to get away from it all, but most have upgraded to the normal luxuries of a hotel or resort. Direct TV and wireless internet are now an included amenity in your lodge at most places.

Even if fishing is not for you, you can still find plenty of activities to occupy your time such as hiking, bird watching, water sports, boat tours, snowmobiling, skiing, and much more. A lot of these activities are included in your total cost or are very reasonably priced. If you have never been fishing, Canada might be the place to start, go out with a guide for one day and enjoy “shore lunch” on one of the many islands in your lake. Shore lunch is guaranteed to get your mouth-watering with some of the freshest fish you have ever tasted.

If you are thinking of taking a vacation and want complete privacy and relaxation, Canada awaits you with open arms. Start up a new hobby or just relax in the quiet surroundings of your camp. Your first trip might lock you in for years to come just as it has for my family, 25 years and counting.

Finding and catching small northern pike is relatively easy. They spend most of their time in shallow, weedy areas from 2 to 15 feet deep. But catching those nasty monster northern pike is not as simple. They are found among the smaller pike during the spring, but as it warms up in the summer they move into deeper water, 15 to 30 feet or more. Fishing for these big fish becomes more difficult because they are more scattered. Summer angling for northern pike is also difficult if the water becomes too warm. If pike cannot find cooler water they do not eat as frequently or eat very little.

Northern pike are best fished during the daylight hours. They are rarely caught while fishing later at night but it does happen.

The mature northern pike generally stay in one area, hiding in weedy cover waiting for that bait fish or hopefully your enticing lure or bait. Typically northern pike lay motionless waiting in ambush in the weeds or near submerged cover like logs or rocks. Then they like to make short vicious lunges at passing baite fish and again your enticing offering. They can live in almost any freshwater environment.

Inlets and bays on the larger lakes or even the Great Lakes in Canada and the US harbor large numbers of large northern pike. These bays have slightly warmer water and more food than the open water.

Smaller northern lakes of the Canadian Shield can grow trophy northern pike, usually because they do not havethe heavy fishing pressure of the southern lakes, they survive longer and grow to trophy size.

Weedy bays and marshes of most lakes all hold northerns, manmade reservoirs hold large northern pike with all that submerged cover created is perfect environment for these nasty boys.

Bobber fishing for northern pike is a great, fun way to fish. Northerns cannot resist a big minnow dangling from a bobber. They may sit and just stare, but eventually that nasty pike will strike out and attack. Just cast that bobber and bait close to a likely weed-line, drop off, sunken island or point, then just sit back, relax and enjoy.

A bobber rig is easily made, use a 12 inch steel leader and a #1 hook. Attach a 1 1/2 or 2 inch bobber to the line. Add sinkers or split shot to balance. Hook a large minnow in the upper lip or just behind the dorsal fin. Regardless of the type of minnows you use try to use something at least 6 inches long.

The strike of a northern pike is usually violent. The fish may yank the bobber under on one strike. Release the line after the strike. A pike often grabs the bait in the middle or crosswise and then run with it. Then it will stop to swallow the bait, reel in any slack line then make your snap and set the hook. The fight of a big northern pike will test your tackle and of course your skill. Often they will put up very little fight until they are close to the boat or shore. Then without warning that northern willmake a few long runs or even clear the surface in a leap to throw that hook, so get out there and have fun and enjoy yourself.

After northerns have left the shallows in summer trolling fast is a great way to entice these nasty predators to strike. Troll just off the weed beds, in about 20 feet of water, with large lipped deep diving plugs that will track straight at higher speeds. Most anglers use a stiff rods and level wind reels with 20 to 30 pound test line.

With that snake-like body, huge head and razor-sharp teeth, the northern pike has a fearsome appearance and a nasty reputation to match. It is not uncommon for a pike to strike a large bass, perch or walleye struggling on the end of your line. In some cases they will just not let go even when up to the boat.

In most waters, the northern pike is top dog. They will also feed on muskrats, mice, turtles, salamanders, small ducks and other birds, although they eat mostly fish. Often they will take on other fish half their size.

When northern pike are prowling the shallows, casting allows you to fish weeds or snag infested areas you could not otherwise fish. Lures; with lively action work best. Metal spoons that wobble entice the strike. Try using bright colors red yellow and silver work fine. Just vary your speed and jerk the bait now and then to attract the fish, again just go fishing and enjoy!
